Dan Mullen

Dan Mullen is the strength and conditioning coach behind the SportsFit cricket program — and his credentials are grounded in active participation at the highest level of club cricket in NSW, not just coaching qualifications.

As 2nd grade captain for Sydney Cricket Club, Head of S&C for the club, and S&C coach at Riverview, Dan operates within the game at every level — from elite junior development through to Premier Grade competition. That gives him a depth of understanding of cricket-specific physical demands that generic S&C coaches simply don't have.

Working alongside our physiotherapy team at SportsFit, Dan bridges the performance and injury management worlds — ensuring that S&C programming and injury management are never working against each other.

The Program

What the Program Covers

The current program focuses on U19 fast bowlers — the most physically demanding and injury-prone position in cricket. The program is built around three pillars.

Pillar 1
Physical Development

Building the strength, power, and physical qualities that allow fast bowlers to bowl fast, bowl long, and recover well. This includes lower body strength, trunk stability, upper body conditioning, and the athletic capacities that underpin bowling performance — sprint speed, change of direction, and explosive power.

Pillar 2
Field Sessions & Conditioning

Cricket-specific field sessions that develop the athletic qualities the game demands — sprint mechanics, change of direction, throwing conditioning, and game-based fitness. These sessions are structured around the cricket calendar and complement gym-based training with on-field work that transfers directly to match performance.

Pillar 3
Injury Risk Reduction

Addressing the physical risk factors for the most common cricket injuries — lumbar stress fractures, hamstring strains, and side strains. Screening, targeted exercise prescription, and proactive management of emerging issues before they become injuries that cost the bowler their season.

Who the Program Suits

Is This Program Right for You?

The program is currently open to cricketers at several levels. If you're serious about your cricket and want structured physical preparation — this is built for you.

🏃
U19 Fast Bowlers

Our primary current focus. Young fast bowlers who want to develop the physical qualities to bowl faster, bowl more, and stay injury-free through a full season. Workload management and injury risk reduction are integrated from day one.

🏏
Premier Grade & Club Cricketers

Cricketers competing at club level who want structured physical preparation that's built around cricket — not generic gym programming. Pre-season conditioning, in-season maintenance, and return-to-performance after injury.

🌟
Aspiring Elite Cricketers

Junior and youth cricketers with representative ambitions who want the physical foundation to support their technical development. Building robustness and athletic capacity alongside their cricket skills.

Our Methodology

How the Program Works

The program integrates S&C and physiotherapy — two disciplines that are too often siloed in cricket player development.

01

Initial Assessment

Physical screening to identify strength deficits, mobility limitations, and injury risk factors specific to the player's position and workload. For fast bowlers this includes lumbar spine assessment, hip mobility, hamstring strength and flexibility, and current workload review. This informs the individual program design.

02

Individual Program Design

A cricket-specific training program tailored to the player's position, physical profile, current fitness level, and season schedule. Pre-season programs differ from in-season programs — we periodise appropriately rather than applying the same approach year-round.

03

Workload Monitoring

Ongoing tracking of bowling loads — particularly for fast bowlers — using established workload metrics. We flag concerning load spikes, communicate with coaches where needed, and adjust training around match schedules to manage cumulative fatigue and injury risk.

04

Physio Integration

When injury issues arise — or when injury risk factors are identified on screening — the physiotherapy team is immediately available. Dan and our physios communicate directly, so S&C programming and injury management are always aligned. There's no gap between the two.

05

Ongoing Review & Progression

Regular reassessment to track physical development, adjust the program as the season progresses, and ensure the player is getting stronger, more robust, and better prepared for cricket's demands. The program evolves with the player.

Common Questions

FAQ — Cricket S&C Program

Is the program only for fast bowlers?

The current primary focus is U19 fast bowlers, but the program is open to cricketers at other levels and positions. Book a free call to discuss your specific situation and we'll advise on whether and how the program suits your needs.

Is it individual or group training?

The current program runs as small group training — which allows individual programming within a group environment. This keeps costs accessible while maintaining the individualisation that makes the program effective. Book a call to discuss current availability and format.

Can I join if I'm currently injured?

Yes — in fact, integrating with our physiotherapy team during injury is one of the strengths of the program. We can design an S&C program that works around your current injury, maintains your physical conditioning during recovery, and transitions smoothly into full cricket preparation as you rehabilitate.

How do I find out more or sign up?

Book a free call using the link below. Dan or one of our team will contact you to discuss the program, your cricket goals, and whether it's the right fit — before any commitment is required.
